You’ve watched him pull back — into the room, into the game, into the feed. The standard advice has been to wait it out. You’re not sure waiting is the answer.

Mentor Counseling® is not therapy.

Mentor Counseling® is not therapy, and it isn’t a parenting-philosophy or a values curriculum for boys. It’s the work of giving a teen boy what his world doesn’t offer enough of: an adult outside his family and outside his feed, paying attention to who he is — not to the version he performs for friends or the version his algorithm has been building for him. Mentor Counseling is for boys overwhelmed by the question of who to become, not boys who are mentally ill. It runs alongside therapy when therapy is needed. If your son is in crisis, the first step is a referral to clinical care.

What Life Coaching for Teen Boys Is

Life coaching for teen boys is one-on-one developmental work centered on the question every teenage boy is answering whether he knows it or not: what kind of man am I going to be? The work helps him answer it on his own terms — through conversation, practice, and a relationship that isn’t his parent or his teacher.

Teen boys are forming that answer inside a feed with answers ready — algorithmic, loud, rarely the right ones. The work gives him a quieter place to figure it out.

Sessions are virtual, 50–60 minutes, available worldwide from Jeff’s Marin County, California base. Most premium-tier engagements run six to eighteen months.

How Mentor Counseling Works

Mentor Counseling combines three disciplines one-on-one: life coaching for direction, leadership development for skill-building, and deep listening — the non-clinical foundation that makes the first two land. Boys To Mensch applies all three to becoming a good man. The work focuses on what kind of choices he wants to be making, what kind of person he wants to be in a room, what kind of friend he wants to be when no one’s watching.

What We Address with Teen Boys

What the work addresses with teenage boys, in practice:

  1. Withdrawal into screens — gaming, scrolling, the door that closes and stays closed.
  2. The “what kind of man” question, often answered by the loudest voice in his feed unless someone helps him.
  3. Academic disengagement — when school stops being a place he’s becoming someone and becomes something to survive.
  4. Friendships getting shallower when he needs them deepest — topics male friends stop talking about around 14.
  5. Direction and purpose — answering “what am I doing this for” before the feed does.

Why Evolution Mentoring and Life Coaching

Boys today form their identity in a feed full of answers — algorithmic, loud, rarely the right ones. Between 13 and 18, those answers harden. The people he has access to then matter more than ever.

Jeffrey Leiken has worked with teen boys and their families since 1998 — more than 25 years across 17 countries. He holds an MA in Educational Counseling, is adjunct faculty at the University of San Francisco, guest-lectures at Stanford, gave a TEDx talk on adolescent leadership, and authored a book on the subject. Boys To Mensch is the positive-masculinity modality he developed inside Mentor Counseling.

What Parents Commonly Notice

  1. The withdrawal reverses direction. The room, the game, the feed pull less — and a door that was closed starts opening again.
  2. Conversations outside the family start happening. He initiates with a teacher, coach, or uncle without parent prompting.
  3. “What kind of man” becomes audible. He names — directly or sideways — the kind of man he wants to be, rather than rejecting the loud voices in his feed.
  4. Decisions get owned, not negotiated. “I decided” starts replacing “I have to” — choices begin to feel like his.
  5. Friendships deepen rather than dilute. One or two real friendships emerge from the broader social pattern.

The Process

      1. Start with a 30-minute consultation — a working call that surfaces what’s going on at home and whether this is the right work.
      2. If it fits, weekly virtual sessions of 50–60 minutes begin within a week.
      3. Direct reach-out between sessions — when something hard happens, you don’t wait.
      4. Cadence recalibrates as the work matures.

Standard agreements:

  • No obligation to continue after the first session if the fit isn’t right.
  • Confidentiality holds within the bounds of mandatory reporting law.
  • No diagnoses, no clinical labels, no treatment of mental illness.

What Families say

“We ran the gamut of therapists and experts trying to help our son. The only person who ever got through to him and made the difference, was Jeff… We trust him. Our son trusts him, and most importantly, our son listens to him”

— Dee, Mill Valley, CA

“Thank you for saving our son’s life. The young man he is now on track to becoming is beyond anything we’d thought possible when we hired you after everything else had failed… The work you did with him in just a few months was nothing short of miraculous.

— Carlo and Stefano, Parents, San Francisco

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

What if my son won't talk?

Most teen boys are skeptical at first. Jeff doesn’t push or lecture or ask the questions that get a boy’s defenses up. The work starts with him being heard.

Is this about teaching him a particular kind of masculinity?

No. Boys To Mensch isn’t a formula for how to be a man. It’s the practice of him answering the question himself.

Is this the same as therapy?

No. Therapists treat clinical conditions. Mentor Counseling is the work of becoming — character, direction, the skills of growing up; clinical care referred when needed.

Are sessions virtual or in-person?

Virtual and worldwide. Jeff’s practice is based in Marin County and reaches families in 17 countries.
